What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is the suctioning away of excess fat cells. Hundreds of thousands of people in the U.S. undergo liposuction yearly; it is one of our top procedures. The most common treatment areas are:

  • Abdomen
  • Thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Love handles
  • Hips
  • Back
  • Knees
  • Female Breasts
  • Male breasts (gynecomastia)
  • Neck

Liposuction is a surgical procedure. You should choose a plastic surgeon who has the skills, experience and qualifications to perform liposuction safely and effectively. Dr. Fugo is a board-certified plastic surgeon who regularly performs liposuction. We hope you will take a moment to browse before-and-after photos of Dr. Fugo’s liposuction patients. He wants to make sure each patient is matched to the procedure that is right for their individual goals.

Dr. Fugo makes sure each guest to our practice knows the full range of options. It could be the case that other surgical and non-surgical treatments will accomplish your goals, either instead of or in addition to liposuction. For example, a tummy tuck is best-suited to removing a large area of excess skin and fat from the abdomen as well as addressing excess muscle laxity, and is typically combined with liposuction for comprehensive results.

Why is Liposuction not a Weight Loss Method?

Liposuction is a body sculpting method, not a means of losing weight. The distinction is that the best candidates are at or near their ideal body weight, not overweight. Liposuction is really a way to refine certain areas where stubborn fat lingers. It does not remove significant amounts of weight.

For people who have been pursuing fitness and weight loss, liposuction can be very rewarding. Some fat simply doesn’t shrink no matter how hard you hit the gym. That can be disappointing. With liposuction, you can reap the full rewards of weight loss and fitness by removing those lingering pockets of fat.

Liposuction Procedure and Recovery

Liposuction is often performed under general anesthesia, although local anesthetic and sedation may be appropriate in some circumstances. You will have previously arranged for someone to come with you to the appointment and drive you home afterward.

The fat is suctioned out of the treatment area via a long, thin tube called a cannula. One of the great things about the procedure is that only small incisions need to be used, just a few millimeters wide. The cannula is inserted through small incisions, and Dr. Fugo first breaks up the fat cells and then suctions them away. The remaining scars are sub-centimeter lines, and become lighter and flatter over time.

After surgery, we will send you home once Dr. Fugo says it is safe to do so. You will go home and rest. Someone needs to be around to help you for the first 24-48 hours. You will be up and walk around periodically to promote blood circulation, but do not plan to engage in any strenuous physical activity for a few weeks.

Other things to expect from recovery:

  • You will wear a compression garment for a short time, to support the healing tissue
  • You will notice an immediate difference in the treatment area, although it will be swollen at first
  • Swelling dissipates over the following 6-12 weeks
  • Most patients feel comfortable returning to work 5-7 days post-op
  • Depending upon your particular procedure, you typically begin to resume exercise at 10 days post-op

It can take up to 3 months to see the final results of liposuction. Swelling will continue to go down during that time.

The results are long-lasting. The fat that is removed is gone for good, although it is of course possible to gain new weight. Any new weight gain is unlikely to be isolated to the treatment area, but may show in various areas of the body. Most people feel even more motivated to pursue a stable weight and fitness after liposuction.
