Liposuction permanently removes select fat cells in a specific treatment area, such as the abdomen, back, hips or thighs. There are many reasons a person may consider liposuction, with the most common being:
- Stubborn fat that resists diet and exercise
- Areas of the physique the patient wants to further sculpt and define
- Bulging pockets of fat that have developed as you’ve grown older
Overall weight loss is not a reason to consider liposuction; the procedure does not work in that way. Instead, it acts as a way to sculpt and fine tune your body by removing isolated fat. It does not lead to weight loss. Candidates for liposuction oftentimes accomplish a weight loss goal first, and then get liposuction as a final touch. Other types of candidates may have never been overweight and may be in great shape, but find that small areas on their bodies are puffy despite their fitness.
How Does it Work?
During this body procedure, a thin tube called a cannula is used to break apart fat and suction it away. One of the great things about this procedure is that only the smallest of incisions are used. The cannula does not require large incisions for insertion. Once the incisions heal over, the resulting scars will be very discreet. Most liposuction patients are able to hide them beneath clothing, lingerie, swimsuits, etc.

Both liposuction and CoolSculpting can help you permanently remove stubborn pockets of fat, but these procedures are far from the same. While CoolSculpting is a non-surgical solution designed to freeze away fat in specific areas of your body, liposuction is a surgical procedure that can remove more fat per session. Learn more about these two procedures and which one would be best for you.
Many patients come to Dr. Fugo Plastic Surgery and Laser Skin Care Center looking to rid themselves of unwanted fat. To help patients battle the bulge, Dr. Fugo offers two approaches to fat reduction at his New Windsor practice: Surgical liposuction and Non-surgical CoolSculpting. While the two share the same ultimate objective of slimming and contouring, they do so using two very different methods. Thus, they vary in how the fat is reduced.
Many men and women are self-conscious of their midsection. Whether it because of fat accumulation, a protruding belly, or loose and sagging skin—a less than perfect midsection can cause individuals to feel dissatisfied and uncomfortable with their figure or physique. As such, Dr. Fugo’s New Windsor patients are relieved to know that there are options available to them.
Liposuction and Tummy tuck are two of Dr. Fugo’s most popular tummy toning procedures. While both are means to a fitter and flatter you, tummy tuck surgery and liposuction achieve results in very different ways.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that last year alone, well over 200,000 men and women underwent liposuction. Always a patient favorite, Dr. Fugo is not at all surprised by this statistic, “liposuction is one of the most popular procedures at my New Windsor practice,” he says.
