What Type of Breast Implant Should I Get?

Dr. Fugo Handing Breast Implant to Patient
Once you’ve chosen to undergo breast augmentation, there are still more decisions to be made. One of the most important is what type of breast implant you’d like. There’s no right answer, and your decision will require you to carefully consider the benefits of each type, among other factors.

Silicone vs. Saline

Silicone and saline are the two main types of breast implants. The key difference between the two is how they are filled:

  • Silicone implants are pre-filled with a silicone gel substance before surgery
  • Saline implants are filled with a sterile saline solution at the time of treatment

While Dr. Fugo orders silicone implants to your exact size specifications, saline implants offer slightly more variability over your final results as they are filled during surgery. This allows for “preferential filling” to compensate for minor differences in breast volumes.

The gel in silicone implants makes them less prone to rippling and helps them maintain their shape in the event of a rupture. They also provide more natural-feeling results. Silicone implants are FDA-approved for women 22 years and older.

Should a rupture occur in a saline implant, the sterile salt-water solution is safely absorbed by your body. When placing saline implants, Dr. Fugo can make a slightly smaller surgical incision. Saline implants are FDA-approved for women 18 years and older.

Breast Implant Sizing

In addition to the implant material, you will need to consider your implant size. You and Dr. Fugo will work together to create your ideal size. Dr. Fugo will consider your weight, height and chest dimensions. He will also look at your skin elasticity and how much breast tissue you have.

Bring photos to your consultation depicting models or results that most closely reflect your ideal breast aesthetic. These photos will guide Dr. Fugo toward the appropriate implant volume that will help you obtain the appearance you ultimately desire.

Forget “cup size.” This is a completely arbitrary value. It means absolutely nothing in determining implant volume as there is not, nor has there ever been an industry standard for cup size manufacturing.

Your Surgical Goals, Lifestyle & Expected Outcomes

Since all breast implants have their advantages and disadvantages, it can be difficult to determine which one is best. Dr. Fugo will help guide you through this decision. Prior to your consultation, you should also ask yourself the following questions:

  • Are larger breasts or a natural-looking chest my primary goal?
  • Do I care more about how my breasts look or how my breasts feel? Are both factors of equal importance to me?
  • Will I be engaging in high-intensity exercise frequently following breast augmentation?
  • Have I considered future implant maintenance and potential complications, such as ruptures or ripples?

When you visit our office for your initial consultation, you will have the chance to discuss these topics with Dr. Fugo in depth. He will also give you a comprehensive overview of the different implant options.
