What is Liposuction?

A woman in fitness underwear and a crop top with short bob hair poses athletically in front of a blue backgroundLiposuction is the surgical reduction of excess fat cells. It’s a very common procedure, with more than 200,000 performed in the U.S. in 2020. The basic idea is that excessive fat is suctioned out of the treatment area. These excess fat cells aren’t necessary for overall health, and removing them can be the leg up you need when diet and exercise have no effect on the stubborn fat.

Liposuction can be tailored to areas of fat both large and small. Some of the most common treatment locations are:

  • Hips
  • Butt
  • Abdomen
  • Back
  • Axilla, Breasts and Chest
  • Waist
  • Flanks
  • Inner Thighs
  • Inner Knees
  • Neck

If you aren’t sure whether liposuction or another body contouring procedure is right for your area of concern, then we hope you’ll contact Dr. Fugo to learn more. He’ll first want to listen fully to what you have to say about the changes you’d like to see. He takes dedicated time with each person to make sure everything is discussed. After learning more about your expectations and examining the area you’d like to treat, Dr. Fugo will be able to tell you whether liposuction will be a good match, and if you should consider other body procedures like a tummy tuck or thigh lift.

Small incisions are used to complete liposuction. The fat is suctioned away with a narrow plastic tube that is topped by a narrow stainless steel tube called a cannula. The cannula is inserted through very small circular incisions, so the resulting scars are not obvious. In fact, most people feel like the scars in no way indicate surgery was performed once they are fully healed.

The fat that is removed is gone for good. It is still possible to gain new weight after liposuction, so an active and fit lifestyle is an important part of maintaining your results.
