Liposuction vs. CoolSculpting: Which Is Right for You?

Woman in Black Dress Sitting on White Block After Liposuction and CoolSculptingBoth liposuction and CoolSculpting can help you permanently remove stubborn pockets of fat, but these procedures are far from the same. While CoolSculpting is a non-surgical solution designed to freeze away fat in specific areas of your body, liposuction is a surgical procedure that can remove more fat per session. Learn more about these two procedures and which one would be best for you.

Benefits of Liposuction

Liposuction sculpts your form by surgically removing fat throughout your body. During the procedure, Dr. Fugo will make small incisions along your treatment sites and use a thin, hollow tube called a cannula to suction out your fatty deposits.

Liposuction can eliminate fat in your:

  • Hips and stomach
  • Thighs and knees
  • Back and arms
  • Neck and chest

In addition to giving you a more proportionate, defined figure, liposuction can be used in conjunction with other surgical procedures. When performed at the same time as a tummy tuck or post-weight loss plastic surgery, liposuction can improve your results.

Since liposuction is a surgical procedure, it can remove larger amounts of fat than can be achieved using CoolSculpting. If you want dramatic results in a single one- to three-hour treatment, it may be a good option for you.

Recovering From Liposuction

You will need to set aside several days away from work and other responsibilities to recover from liposuction. Dr. Fugo performs liposuction under sedation or general anesthesia, so someone will need to drive you home after your procedure and you’ll need someone to stay with you during your first night home.

While liposuction produces near immediate changes in your body contour, bruising and swelling may initially hide your results. Your body needs to rest for several days before you can return to work and other daily activities. You should avoid strenuous activities for two to three weeks until your body is completely healed.

Dr. Fugo uses a custom cannula to minimize the size of your incisions and resulting scars. These scars will fade over time, giving you the freedom to enjoy your newly sculpted body in whatever clothes you’d like.

Benefits of CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting uses a scientifically proven method called cryolipolysis to freeze away up to 25 percent of your fat cells in the treatment region in a single session, without the need for incisions or anesthesia. The treatment is FDA-approved to remove fat bulges in the following areas:

  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Abdomen and flanks
  • Back and upper arms
  • Beneath the chin
  • Under the buttocks

CoolSculpting can be completed in as little as 35 minutes, but typically requires more than 1 treatment session, making it the perfect option for busy professionals and parents who need a fast and easy fat-reduction solution. CoolSculpting is safe for anyone, while liposuction is not recommended for people with certain medical conditions.

Recovering From CoolSculpting

As a non-surgical procedure, CoolSculpting requires absolutely no downtime. Though you may experience mild swelling, bruising or numbness in your treated areas, you can resume your normal routine immediately following treatment.

While liposuction can remove a desired amount of fat in a single session, you will likely require several CoolSculpting treatments for best results. You will typically see final results two to three months after your treatment cycle is complete. As your body continues to process and remove your frozen fat cells, you will notice a slimmer figure.
