Chin Surgery

Chin surgery in New York (often called mentoplasty or genioplasty), is a surgical procedure to reshape or redefine the chin. This can be accomplished in several ways. Your plastic surgeon may recommend enhancement with an injectable filler or placement of a permanent chin implant.

The general goal of cosmetic chin surgery is to provide a harmonious balance to your chin and facial features so that you feel better about the way you look.

New York Plastic Surgeon Dr. Fugo may recommend chin surgery or enhancement to patients having nose surgery in order to achieve facial proportion, as the size of the chin may magnify or minimize the perceived size of the nose.

What Happens During Chin Surgery?

Chin augmentation with injectable fillers is done quickly and painlessly in the office. For surgical chin enhancement, intravenous sedation or general anesthesia is administered for your comfort. Dr. Fugo will discuss these options and recommend the best choice for you.

Surgery will usually require less than one hour. Before the surgery, Dr. Fugo selects the proper size and shape implant to enhance your appearance. With a short incision inside the mouth along the crease that joins your lower lip and gums, Dr. Fugo can place a chin implant into a pocket directly onto the bone.  An incision just beneath the chin is another alternative that may be recommended for those individuals with a pre-existing scar.

Recovering from Chin Surgery

Your incisions will be closed with absorbable sutures or stitches that will dissolve on their own within 1 weeks following your surgery. While the initial outcome of plastic surgery with facial implants is noticeable almost immediately, it may be obscured by visible swelling, which can take time to fully dissipate.
