What Were the Most Popular Procedures in 2020?

Flipping wooden cubes for new year change 2020 to 2021Although last year certainly presented us all with challenges, plastic surgeons across the country were able to continue providing safe, state-of-the-art cosmetic procedures with reinforced safety protocols in place for COVID-19.

During the worst of the pandemic in 2020, plastic surgeons across the country closed their practices to help stop the spread. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, practices nationally stopped performing elective procedures for an average of 8 weeks in 2020, which of course meant fewer elective procedures than usual were performed overall.

Nonetheless, as practices reopened with new safety measures in place to prevent the spread, there were more than 2,314,720 procedures performed in 2020, which was a 14 percent decrease from 2019. Statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show that facial procedures were at the head of the pack in 2020:

When you think about it, it makes sense that people sought facial enhancement and rejuvenation when so many of us shifted to video chat meetings. Suddenly, we were all looking at our computers but saw ourselves staring back! Men and women alike sought out procedures to restore defined eyelid contours, and lift sagging facial skin and descending jawlines.

As we reach the mid-summer season of 2021, and a return to normalcy, the ASPS reports a strong interest in cosmetic procedures. If you’ve been considering one for yourself, we hope you will visit Dr. Fugo to find out how we can help you refresh, beautify, and rejuvenate your face and body.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

Handsome happy man wearing white T-shirt at the sea or the ocean backgroundMale breast enlargement, also known as gynecomastia, is usually caused by an imbalance of hormones, particularly testosterone and estrogen. When estrogen levels are too high in males, it can cause breast tissue to swell. Although natural hormonal changes can lead to gynecomastia, it is also caused by certain health conditions or medications. Here are some of the most common causes of gynecomastia and how a male breast reduction can help.

Age

While gynecomastia is most commonly associated with newborn babies, it is also common in boys going through puberty. However, these forms of the condition usually go away within a few months after birth or the start of puberty. More resilient forms of male breast enlargement are usually found in men above the age of 50. In fact, about 1 in 4 men between the ages of 50 and 80 have gynecomastia.

Underlying Health Conditions

There are a variety of health conditions that can cause men to develop gynecomastia. This includes obesity, hyperthyroidism, hypoandrogenism, hypogonadism, kidney failure, liver disease, and tumors. While gynecomastia itself does not usually pose a health risk, it can sometimes indicate an underlying condition, so it’s important to meet with your doctor regularly.

Certain Medications or Drugs

Both prescription medications and drugs can contribute to male breast enlargement. Anabolic steroids are a common culprit, but other substances can cause gynecomastia as well. This includes calcium channel blockers, proton pump inhibitors, estrogens, as well as medications used to treat anxiety, fungal infections, bacterial infections, fertility issues, or an enlarged prostate. Other drugs like amphetamines, marijuana, methadone, heroine, and alcohol can also lead to breast enlargement.

How Male Breast Reduction Can Help

Male breast reduction is an effective, long-lasting solution that uses liposuction to remove excess breast tissue. During the procedure, Dr. Jonathan Fugo removes the stubborn tissue using cannulas, creating a smoother chest appearance. Recovery takes just a few weeks, and the results are immediately noticeable following the surgery.

Maintaining Your Surgical Results

A woman chopping fruit for a smoothie. After any face or body contouring procedure, there are several things that can affect your short- and long-term results. Most of these factors are entirely within your control. While aging will naturally reduce the elasticity of your skin, you can postpone or minimize the impact with a few mindful practices.

Avoid Excess Sun Exposure

UV rays are the most common cause of premature skin aging. Sun exposure without UV protection can weaken your skin, causing it to become lax. Over time, this will cause loose skin to return to the treated area. To help protect your body contouring results, apply SPF 30+ sunscreen to your skin if you are going outside for 30 minutes or more. In addition, cover your skin with long sleeved clothing when possible and wear a wide-brimmed hat.

Follow a Healthy Diet

Extreme changes in weight can greatly affect the outcome of your procedures. While the fat cells removed from your treatment area will not grow back, it is entirely possible to store fat in the remaining fat cells in the surgical area and surrounding areas. To prevent fluctuations in weight, eat a balanced, healthy diet consisting of lean protein, vegetables, whole grains, and fruits. This will not only prevent weight gain or loss, but also provide the nutrients your skin needs to maintain its elasticity and strength for years to come.

Exercise Often

Consistent exercise, whether light or intense, is a great way to stave off weight gain and maintain muscle tone. In general, it is best to get at least 30 minutes of exercise per day. If you need some variety, try alternating between cardio and strength training. Never underestimate even the simple exercises like walking. Remember…..something is better than nothing. Every single person can find a few minutes of every day for physical activity.

How to Prepare for Breast Augmentation

A happy young woman with brown wavy hair and a floral blouse raises her fists and smiles with her eyes closed against a pink backgroundIf you’ve decided to get breast augmentation surgery, there are a few different ways you can prepare for the procedure to help ensure a smooth recovery. Preparing for the surgery will not only make recovery easier, but also reduce the amount of post-operative pain you experience and lessen the risk of complications. Here are some of the best ways you can prepare for your breast augmentation.

You Will Need Someone With You

While breast surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure, you will be extremely sleepy afterwards due to the anesthesia. As a result, you will not be able to drive yourself home and you will need someone with you for your first full night home. Ask a spouse, friend, or family member to drive you home from your procedure and monitor you for at least 24 hours.

Setup Your Recovery Space

During recovery, you will need to rest as much as possible. For this reason, it is best to keep anything you need next to your bed so that it is within reach. This includes water, snacks, tissues, entertainment, and your phone. Don’t forget to grab extra batteries for your TV remote or a charger for your phone.

Prepare Meals Ahead of Time

Before you go into your surgery, try to prepare some nutritious meals for at least the first week or so of recovery. Meals high in vitamins and minerals will assist your body in the healing process, so try to incorporate fruits and vegetables in each meal. Some patients do this by cooking the meals and putting them in the freezer so they can easily be microwaved later.

Find Loose Clothing to Wear

To reduce strain on your breasts, try to wear loose clothing that is easy to take on and off both on the day of your procedure and during recovery.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Breast Lift?

Carefree mature woman walking barefoot at beach. For those who want to restore the youthful shape and firmness of their breasts, a breast lift is often a great choice. However, there are several factors that affect your candidacy for a breast lift procedure. Whether you are considering a breast lift now or in the near future, Dr. Jonathan Fugo can help you determine if the procedure is right for you based on your aesthetic goals.

Generally, you may be an ideal candidate for a breast lift if:

  • Your breasts are elongated or saggy. As you age, your nipples may fall beneath the crease of your breast, pointing towards the ground. You may also experience uncomfortable rashes underneath the breasts. A breast lift helps by giving the breast tissue a more youthful profile.
  • Your breasts have an unusual shape or are uneven. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, significant weight loss, and other life events can cause breasts to lose their shape, symmetry, and volume. During your procedure, Dr. Fugo can reshape the breasts, giving them an even, perky appearance.
  • You have stretched-out skin on your breasts. When your breasts sag, they pull down on the surrounding skin, often causing stretchmarks. By removing excess skin, Dr. Fugo can tighten the breast tissue.
  • You are in good health and don’t smoke. To have any breast surgery, you must be in good enough health to undergo a surgical procedure. If you smoke, you will need to be completely nicotine free for minimum 6 weeks before and after the surgery.

These are just a few of the things that Dr. Fugo takes into consideration when determining your candidacy for a breast lift. The best way to know whether a breast lift is right for you is to set up a consultation.

What are the Benefits of an Arm Lift?

Young woman with her arms behind her head, smiling. If you suffer from droopy or sagging skin hanging from your upper arms, you may benefit from an arm lift. This procedure, also known as a brachioplasty, is a great choice for those who want a tight, proportionate look. With an arm lift done by board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jonathan Fugo, you can expect smooth, toned arms that match your body’s natural contour.

While an arm lift will require some recovery, there are several benefits you will notice after your procedure, including:

  • Less excess fat and skin: During the arm lift procedure, Dr. Fugo will remove fat from the underarm area that extends from near the armpit to the elbow. He will use liposuction to do so, or the fat and skin will be removed together with excision. The size and shape of the incision will depend on the amount of skin you need removed.
  • A defined tone and arm shape: By removing excess tissue and fat, Dr. Fugo can give your arm a more definitive shape and tone.
  • Better proportions and contours: As you age or lose weight, your skin starts to lose its elasticity, making it look stretched. An arm lift can help reduce this effect by tightening the underlying tissue of the arm. This leaves you with contoured arms that are proportionate with the rest of your body.

Once your arm lift procedure is complete, recovery is only a few weeks and is relatively straightforward. Dr. Fugo will walk you through the steps of the procedure and provide the instructions you need for recovery. While it may take up to a year for the incision site to lighten and fade, you will achieve smooth, natural upper arms that match your proportions and body weight.

PicoSure Tattoo Removal

A man with a shaved head holds his palm to his forehead and looks down with regret at an arm tattoo
Let’s face it: We’ve all done things we regret. A certain tattoo is one of those decisions that you may wish you could take back. With PicoSure laser treatment offered by Dr. Fugo, you can remove ink of all colors safely and effectively.

What is PicoSure Tattoo Removal?

This laser treatment is non-surgical, fast and nearly painless. It offers a short treatment time and effective removal. Unlike old forms of laser removal, PicoSure removes not only black ink but any color.

The handheld device emits pulsed picosecond energy that breaks apart selected ink deposits. Over time, your body metabolizes and expels the ink deposits, leaving the tattoo much lighter and often gone completely.

PicoSure is incredibly fast and efficient. Because the pulses are so fast, the laser doesn’t produce unnecessary heat – an issue with older laser technologies. Your skin is protected from harm because of the efficient heat output.

The PicoSure Treatment Process

The laser skin treatment goes like so:

  • A topical anesthetic is applied to your skin so you’ll be as comfortable as possible throughout the procedure
  • The treatment itself may take 15-20 minutes, depending on the size and number of tattoos
  • You typically feel light stinging sensation
  • We’ll place a bandage on the treatment area and you’ll leave with complete instructions for follow-up and care

Most tattoos require 3-6 such sessions before the ink is fully eliminated. The appointments are spaced roughly 6 weeks apart. This number of treatments is a major advantage of older laser technologies, some of which could require double that number of visits.

There’s no downtime afterward, although you’ll need to avoid sun exposure on the treated sight. Mild swelling in the treatment area is normal and the skin may feel sensitive. You may have blistering of the tattoo site. These effects will fade in a few days.

Enjoy the confidence of ridding yourself of a tattoo you no longer want on your body. You deserve to feel good about your appearance. PicoSure offers the opportunity to undo what was once thought irrevocably permanent.

Reasons to Consider Liposuction

A young African American woman laughs and smiles as she lift ups her white tank top to reveal her stomach

Liposuction permanently removes select fat cells in a specific treatment area, such as the abdomen, back, hips or thighs. There are many reasons a person may consider liposuction, with the most common being:

  • Stubborn fat that resists diet and exercise
  • Areas of the physique the patient wants to further sculpt and define
  • Bulging pockets of fat that have developed as you’ve grown older

Overall weight loss is not a reason to consider liposuction; the procedure does not work in that way. Instead, it acts as a way to sculpt and fine tune your body by removing isolated fat. It does not lead to weight loss. Candidates for liposuction oftentimes accomplish a weight loss goal first, and then get liposuction as a final touch. Other types of candidates may have never been overweight and may be in great shape, but find that small areas on their bodies are puffy despite their fitness.

How Does it Work?

During this body procedure, a thin tube called a cannula is used to break apart fat and suction it away. One of the great things about this procedure is that only the smallest of incisions are used. The cannula does not require large incisions for insertion. Once the incisions heal over, the resulting scars will be very discreet. Most liposuction patients are able to hide them beneath clothing, lingerie, swimsuits, etc.

The bottom line in our mind is that you are an individual with individual aspirations and goals. Dr. Jonathan Fugo wants to help you find the cosmetic procedure that will be the right match, and so he looks forward to discussing liposuction and your goals during a one-on-one consultation at our office.
