Getting Lippy: The Low Down on Injectable Lip Fillers

fugo lip enhancement

Now trending! A full, voluptuous, and sensual pout. Evidence to the fact, Google recently released its year-end search statistics. Topping 2015’s list of the most frequently searched beauty questions, “what are lip fillers?” came second only to “how to do the Kylie Jenner lip challenge”. Lips clearly take the cake.

It only makes sense that, as the popularity of larger lips increases, patients are more and more inquiring about cosmetic lip augmentation. Coming to their consultation with a bevy of questions, Dr. Fugo has found that women are ever-curious as to the advantages and disadvantages. With the lips being a prominent feature, women are careful to learn as much as possible about lip augmentation.

First Things First: What Is Lip Augmentation?

Using an injectable filler, Dr. Fugo enhances the appearance of your lips by adding volume while also defining a natural lip line. In his New Windsor practice, Dr. Fugo “augments lips exclusively with Restylane.” Restylane is the “only filler FDA approved for lip injections.” Dr. Fugo further explains, “Restylane is a very soft, small molecule” that has been specially formulated to act like your body’s own naturally produced hyaluronic acid—ensuring a look and feel that mimics your own.

Are Natural Results Possible?

Hoping for a subtle enhancement, women are often concerned that they may end up with an unnaturally large or misshapen mouth. Rest assured, natural enhancement is possible. Like each of us, our lips are unique—understanding this, Dr. Fugo is able “to enhance any lips and make them look fuller, yet still appear completely natural.”

Elaborating, Dr. Fugo explains, “Whenever I’m enhancing lips, it’s important to appreciate the normal anatomic features and specific proportions of one’s upper and lower lip in relation to each other and the rest of the face. It is only by understanding and respecting these principles that I can make for a natural appearance”. You be the judge. Look at before and after images of natural appearing lips created by Dr. Fugo.

What Can You Expect from Lip Augmentation?

Plumping the pout, lip augmentation not only increases volume, but also:

  • Creates a balanced and complimentary degree of fullness between the upper and lower lip
  • Crafts a natural fullness in the proper areas of the lip—softly tapering to the corners
  • Better defines the cupid bow and vermillion border

As an added benefit, lip augmentation can lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles that may have developed in the delicate skin around the lips.

Is There a Recovery Period?

As a non-invasive procedure, there are minimal side effects. That said, Dr. Fugo warns that you can “expect a minimum of three days mild swelling.” Keeping “your head elevated” with the use of “two or three pillows” and “make sure to sleep on your back, not on your side or belly,” advises Dr. Fugo. Another tip, “suck on ice cubes” which also helps minimize post-injection swelling.

How Long Do Lip Injections Last?

“When used in the lips, I generally inform my patients to expect approximately six to eight months of ‘good’ volume from the procedure,” says Dr. Fugo. After which, you will notice a “gradual change” as your lips deflate and return to their normal shape and proportion.

For the best and most comfortable results, Dr. Fugo recommends having a “maintenance injection performed” every three to four months. “This way,” he says, “you avoid the swelling that some get with the initial injection and you are able to maintain the look seamlessly.”
